Research Project:  "Precious Metal Recovery by Biosorption"

Abstract
Gold is extracted from its ores most often by complexing it with cyanide, forming a stable anionic Au-cyanide complex. The biosorption process is being studied for removing the Au-cyanide complex from solution.  The effect of pH on Au cyanide adsorption is established by comparing adsorption isotherms (Au and crab-shell based biosorbents) at different pH with and without increased ionic strength of the solution (as NaCl).  As arsenic is often accompanying gold in ores, its effects on the biosorption process are also examined.
